Tipton County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

About opossums: Appearance, biology, life cycle, habitat, diet, behavior Opossums are from a class of mammals who carry their young ones in a pouch called marsupials like kangaroos and koalas. They are commonly known as possums in America.

Appearance
Opossums have a physique like rodents. They have long tails, pointed faces, and large, hairless ears. Their coats range and vary from red to brown although these mammals are generally found in gray color. They don’t have hair on their tails but have guard hair over their coat.

Biology and Life Cycle
Opossums have thick tails that have some weight. They can use it to balance themselves or grip like monkeys and support their body weight with it. Their females have pouches in their bellies which the young are carried around when born. Mothers give birth to at least 6 and in one litter and can range from 6-9 babies. Within 14 days babies develop from embryos in the womb and have to find their way into the pouch. They are nourished until they can survive on their own. This growth period lasts for about 100 days. Opossums live for 2-4 years. However most young die during the first year. They have very high immunity to snake venom. People fear that they might carry rabies, but that’s not true at all. Opossums are significantly more immune to rabies than dogs. You can find them in a variety of different sizes varying from 30 – 90 cm. They have sharp claws that can easily dig into the wood.

Habitat
Opossums are inhabitants of America and are more commonly found in North America and Canada. They like arid to moist areas. They prefer environments near river streams or swamps. They spent part of their life on trees and are great at climbing. These rodent lookalikes live a solitary life and frequently change locations to escape threats. Opossums can be found living under old abandoned houses. They can dig burrows in the ground, in the tree trunks. They are frequently found in the attic of houses.

Diet
These mammals are herbivores and give preference to vegetables, fruits, grains, and nuts. But can also be found eating dog food and other pet food. In the forest, they widen their food range to frogs, snails, and lizards. They also eat leftovers and are said to look into bins and garbage in search of food.

Behavior
Opossums are not the most courageous of animals and thus frequently change locations and leave if threatened in their home. In danger, they may bear their teeth, make sounds like hissing and growling. But only to try to escape. One of the more interesting weapons in its arsenal is that if it cannot escape it tries to play dead and secretes a greenish smelly liquid from its anal glands. This makes it smell like it’s dead and rotten and most animals leave it be.
